Warch Bade Achhe Lagte Hain: The Shobha Rasam
Review of Episodes 37 – 40, 1st – 4th August 2011.
The Sharmas’ Nani threw a tantrum having been ignored of her insistence of organizing Shobha Rasam which the Kapoors’ Dadi had declined. The Monday’ episode started in this very background, and Ram Kapoor having to decide what to do; whether to ignored his grandma’s decision and do something for ‘poor’ Priya. Ram went up to his grandma’s room with a plate of samosas and influenced her to consider what the Sharmas had proposed.
The week’ episodes followed the same environment of the previous week’ episodes; the planning for the marriages occupied the families, in other words, took toll of the story narrations. In the meantime, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain concurring characters were subjectively minuscule to small screen time. The Karthik-Natasha love relationship had been deduced or sewed into backdrop; Mrs. Kapoor clawing personality had been reduced to protective manners and instances from their Dadi, for her brother mainly. And the brother-sister duo had stopped observing Priya – her simplicity – fancying her ‘low’ status in the family after the marriage. Their focus had shifted to a new target, Apehsa Maholtra: who had been calling the Kapoors, Ram in particular.
The character introduction of Apehsa with phone calls, first before the first date and to until now, attempted to give past relationship of Ram Kapoor. Ram avoided Apehsa calls. She requested him to meet her. And Ram confronted to his step-mother about the ‘threat’. The character actions, which seem a quick strike at first, had been injected into the story further. This very motive could be seen when the Tuesday’ episode ending where her presence was mentioned to Ram in company with Priya but was deliberately embellished to a direct call to Ram instead away from Priya in the Wednesday’ episode. The development of this sub-plot had instigated one mystery. And, for sure, it seems a delicious tip.
Back to the Shobha rasam, the main event or theme of the week: The event took place at the Kapoor residence. And both the elderly of the families were themselves pitted against each other over petty issues leading to the event. But these instances were carefully sketched and delicately woven with romantic gestures between the lead pair. Saakshi Tanwar and Ram Kapoor had shown their credentials. The Shoba rasam had brought interesting moments of the lead pair. Ram Kapoor confident take on his marriage to Priya drove from robust strength of Ram Kapoor organic approach to the character. Saakshi Tanwar display histrionics when Priya sat awe-inspiring to her fiancé for the first time.
The protagonists love story diligently developed within these parameters. Ram Kapoor and Priya Sharma who came together on the pretext of their family were now complimenting each other. Their every motions together and eye-contacts were registered with the title track playing in between. Some of the incidents which had shown them in the light were brief and less in numbers in the earlier episodes. This week, there were more of them with concrete testimonials for either of them. Ram Kapoor cleared the air that, though he lacks knowledge of Priya’s culture, he’d accepted her to be his wife and with that acceptance the responsibility to keep her happy come naturally. Later Priya convinced both the elderly – Dadi and Nani – who were fighting over the brides wedding attires to considered taking care of their ‘own’ would-be daughter-in-law.
Apart from the development in the love story, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain showcasing of the father-daughter relationship, between Sudhir and Priya Sharma, was one enduring with its mature and convincing takes. This bond was always shown with relevant developments of the character actions and the story line. It won’t be too much even if we called it to have had the show keep its level of maturity intact. The concluding scene where Sudhir talked about his planning and consultations of the marriage ceremony with Priya intentionally established another look of the characters involved. Like other scenes between them, its endearing moments couldn’t be misleading; the father having to think of his eldest daughter leaving his house for her husband’s. These have given the require perspective of the characters, a clearer study of the characters.
In this way, though Thursday’ episode was all about shopping for the bride and groom’s wedding attires, the concluding scene of the day show that Bade Achhe Lagte Hain was fighting itself to stand unshaken of its confident among various possible derailments. While it could be mindlessly crazy as the characters’ pursuits or dense in drama and louder than reality, there’s always a confident level it measure itself.
With the promos running have mention marriage of Priya and Ram starting this Sunday, 7th August, and the whole next week. It significantly reserves the whole week with huge investment of its episodes on the marriages. And this means the event will be grand and magnificent and evidently propitious. This whole time, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain has rationally does not have one pattern to follow, like other shows it blend and bend its strategic character actions and story developments. In a week, it’ll engrossed and neglect, and be predictable like the coming week’ episodes.
